Summary: "A Very Necessary Book"

This book is one of the rarer ones in the current L5R incarnation in that it really does support nearly every clan. The 'Masters of' books limit themselves to certain clans, giving them a huge advantage in campaigns based around those areas, which I feel is a little overboard to what was already powerful about those clans to begin with(If the Lion WERE so good at war, nobody would stand in their way when they went to war...something that doesn't hold true in the history of Rokugan).

This book shows how each clan approaches duels, how they feel duels should be handled, and some alternative ways they've decided to hold them in relation to clan philosophy. Also, the abilities in here aren't limited to duel use only, and have out of duel possiblities as well.

I for one, being a long-time lover of the Phoenix clan, must say that the Naginata Duel abilities can quite handily be used outside of a traditional duel and in combat to FINALLY allow your Phoenix samurai to shine as a naginata wielder...something the Phoenix have been known for mastering.

All in all, amazing book. Can't go wrong adding this to your collection.

Summary: "Good for L5R or D20Rokugan"

This is a very good addition to the Legend of the 5 Rings RPG. It focuses on dueling, the normal way one defends his or her honor. It covers alternatives to the sword; magical duels, martial arts, courtier contests and even using games like Go or Shogi.

It looks at how each clan views duels and how they carry out dueling, including the Shadowlands. There are temples and dojos that teach dueling and new techniques to learn.

Now unlike previous L5R books that were presented in a dual D20/AEG format, this book is exclusive AEG 3rd edition. But since most of this book is color commentary, the little RPG aspects can easily be converted over to D20.
